Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
