Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
